Periscope Kit
Build your periscope and see around corners.
EGP 209
What you will learn
- Light reflects off shiny surfaces and changes direction.
- A mirror redirects light, and its angle decides where the reflection goes.
- The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection.
- Two mirrors at 45° carry light to your eye from a different direction.

In this box you will build a real periscope with your own hands, then use it to see past barriers. After that you will discover how light travels, and how mirrors change its direction.
Hide behind a table and raise it above you like a submarine, or watch a bird from behind a bush without disturbing it — all from one simple scientific idea: the reflection of light.
The science inside
Give light a different route.
Two angled mirrors reflect light down the tube and into your eye. You can see over a barrier without looking over it yourself.

A word in the mirror
Look at a written word through the periscope. Does it appear reversed or the right way round? Why do you think that is?
One mirror only
Cover one of the two mirrors with paper, then look through the periscope. What happens to the image?
Draw the path of the light
Draw the periscope, mark both mirrors on it, then draw the path the light takes using arrows.
Safety rules
- Never look at the sun through the periscope.
- Hold the mirrors gently by their edges — they can be sharp.
- Do not force the wooden parts, or they may break.
- Wipe the mirrors with a soft cloth if they get dirty.
- The kit contains small parts, so keep it away from young children.
