Lamp Kit
Build your own lamp and discover how electricity becomes light.
EGP 239
What you will learn
- A circuit must be complete for current to flow.
- The battery is the energy source, and the switch opens and closes the circuit.
- An LED converts part of the electrical energy into light.
- An LED has a right way round — a positive and a negative leg.
- Copper wire conducts electricity, and the plastic around it insulates.

In this box you will build a small lamp that lights up with electricity, then discover the science that makes it work: the circuit, the battery, the switch and the LED.
Press the button and it glows; press it again and it goes dark. Then switch off the room light and watch the stars and moons on the shade throw shadows across the wall.
The science inside
Make the connection. See the light.
With the LED connected in the right direction, closing the switch completes the circuit and the lamp lights up.

The journey of the energy
Energy never disappears — it changes from one form into another.
- BatteryChemical energy
- WiresElectrical energy
- LEDConverts the electricity
- Light and heatMostly light, a little heat
Try it yourself
Find the legs
Look at the LED. Which leg is longer, and which wire did you connect it to?
Shadow play
Turn off the room light and switch on the lamp. What shapes appear on the wall?
Light messages
Use the switch to send a friend a message in short and long flashes.
A new shade
Draw a new pattern for the shade's cut-outs. How would the shadows change?
Safety rules
- Check which way round the LED and the batteries go before switching on.
- Keep the wires away from water, and do not pull on them hard.
- Ask an adult to heat the heat-shrink tubing. Never use a lighter on your own.
- The kit contains small parts, so keep it away from young children.
