Floating Table Kit

Build your floating table and discover the secret of balance.

EGP 199

What you will learn

  • Tension is a pulling force, and compression is a pushing force.
  • The threads work in tension, while the wood carries compression.
  • The middle thread carries the whole weight of the top.
  • The four side threads stop the top from tilting and turning.
  • When the forces on an object balance, it stays still.

In this box you will build a small table whose top seems to float in mid-air, then discover the science that holds it up: tension, compression and balance.

Tap the edge and watch it wobble and settle back. Look at it from the side and work out what is really carrying the weight. The last step needs two pairs of hands, so build it with a friend.

The central string carries the upper platform. The corner strings stop it tilting and twisting. Together they keep the table balanced.Science concept illustration

The journey of the energy

Energy never disappears — it changes from one form into another.

Try it yourself

  1. Load test

Place light objects on the top one at a time. When does it start to tilt?

  2. Spirit level

Lay a round pencil on the top. Does it roll? Adjust the threads until it stays put.

  3. A gentle puff

Blow softly on one edge of the top. How does it move, and how does it return?

  4. Design your own

Draw a floating table in a new shape. Where would you put the threads?

Safety rules

  • Do not pull the threads too hard, or they may snap or crack the wood.
  • The table is a display model — do not put anything heavy or hot on it.
  • Ask an adult to help when using scissors to trim the threads.
  • The kit contains small parts and thread, so keep it away from young children.
